Ground corridor

Kigali presents a low opportunistic-crime environment by regional standards, though petty theft, courier scams targeting arriving passengers, and unsolicited 'assistance' touts are documented risks in the terminal forecourt and immediate airport approach; the Kanombe–city-centre corridor is generally well-maintained and considered a safe travel route, though travellers should remain alert to motorbike-taxi weaving and road-safety hazards on hilly urban roads.

Pre-arranged transport with vetted professional drivers is the strongly advised option for all security-conscious movements from HRYR, as unregulated vehicles at the kerbside are known to apply inflated fares and may lack verifiable credentials.

The western border districts of Rwanda (Rubavu and Rusizi, within 10 km of the DRC boundary) are subject to active armed-group spillover risk and FCDO advises against all but essential travel there — ground movements toward those areas require explicit risk assessment and should not be undertaken without a dedicated ground support team.
