Airport security

The US State Department maintains Sri Lanka at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) as of 21 February 2026, primarily due to civil unrest rather than security threats to tourists.

According to a report released on March 5, 2025, the country has been recognized for its low terrorism impact, ranking 100th out of 163 countries, with a score of zero in the 2025 Global Terrorism Index, placing it among the safest nations globally in terms of terrorist threats This assessment aligns with VCBI's MODERATE threat level due to occasional civil unrest and regional political tensions rather than active security threats.

Enhanced security measures are also in place at the airport. All passengers and vehicles are thoroughly checked at the airport premises, and this has understandably caused long queues, so we advise passengers to expect the process of entering the airport to take approx 30-60 mnts.

Colombo's airport is laid out in an unusual fashion that puts security screening at each gate rather than at one central point. This means that travellers must wait in the public areas until their flight is ready for boarding.

Pre-arranged transport with vetted, professional drivers is strongly advised over accepting unsolicited offers inside the arrivals hall, as unregulated operators are known to significantly overcharge
• the official airport taxi counter within the arrivals hall provides a regulated alternative with zone-based government fares. Civil unrest in the form of protests can develop with limited warning in Colombo city and may disrupt ground movement on the primary airport access roads
• travelers should monitor conditions and maintain flexibility in ground transport plans.
