Airport security

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in India with heightened risk of terrorism in some Indian regions. Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has placed NSCBI Airport under unprecedented five-tier security system triggered by credible intelligence inputs.

The airport's strategic sensitivity due to its proximity to three international borders supports the established ASTORISK MODERATE rating. The five-tier security system spans perimeter surveillance, access control, terminal building security, passenger and baggage screening, and airside security.

CISF personnel increased from 1,400 to 1,600 implementing rigorous security protocols including thorough vehicle checks, plainclothes officers for passenger profiling, and intensified terminal patrols with sniffer dogs.

A second layer of baggage checks at boarding gates has been introduced to ensure no security lapses.

Customs, immigration and regulatory

Hours: H24 Customs and immigration operate on a 24-hour basis for international arrivals and departures. All international passengers are required to complete an Indian Customs Declaration Form on arrival. Green and Red Channel clearance available.

Ground corridor

Kolkata presents a moderate opportunistic crime environment characterized primarily by petty theft, transport scams, and pickpocketing in congested public areas, with violent crime against travelers being uncommon; road safety is a secondary concern given heavy traffic volumes and variable road discipline on the Jessore Road corridor connecting the airport to central Kolkata, approximately 17 km to the south.

The airport-to-city approach via Jessore Road is the primary transit corridor and carries standard urban traffic risk with no active conflict or movement restriction affecting the route.

Pre-arranged vehicles with vetted professional drivers are strongly advised over independent or unmetered transport due to well-documented fare manipulation targeting foreign travelers; the official prepaid counter within the arrivals hall provides a fixed-fare alternative managed by Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

Unmetered or solicited transport from outside the official arrival zone should be avoided, and visitors should be aware that late-night transport availability can be constrained outside peak periods.
